Kindergarten! February 7-14, 2014

On Friday, we got to meet Britton's Kindergarten teacher, Jessica Skolnick.  I took this picture from online - Rochester's PostBulletin.  I am SO happy she's his teacher! It sounds like all the kindergarten teachers are pretty good, but she sounds like the sweetest.  From the moment I met her, I liked her.  She bent down to Britton's level to talk, touched him on the back, spoke kindly, and showed confidence in herself and him.  She walked us to the classroom and gave us a tour.  Then, as she spoke to me, she let the boys play at the train table.  I got the run down on things and she was very organized and sounded so happy to have Britton join her classroom.  She seems like a person I would love to be friends with!  She told me that I was welcome to walk Britton in to her room on Monday and watch for a while until he got settled.  On the drive home, Britton said something like how he needed to be told again what to do in the classroom because he heard so much, he forgot some of it.

For the weekend, I went to TJMaxx.  I loved this chalk board and will put my menu on it.

Britton made his primary teacher this valentine and I later saw this on Facebook.

Monday, February 10th - Britton's first day of Kindergarten! Usually people's first day of Kindergarten doesn't include a winter coat :-)
I walked in with him (along with Ty and Camden).  First, they lined up in the 'walkers' line.  The 'buser' line was down the other hall.  Then Mrs. Skolnick came to greet Britton.  She introduced him to Ivy who was behind him and asked Ivy to be his friend and help him with the new routines.  It was adorable - as they started walking to the classroom, Ivy put her hand on Britton's back and guided him along.
Then, they got to the classroom.  The other kids knew exactly what to do, so Mrs. Skolnick was able to take Britton aside and teach him what to do. She even had all the kids pause and introduced Britton.  I was amazed how all the kids were so quiet and calm during this whole procedure.  Impressive!
I only stayed 5-10 minutes and watched from the windows in the hall.  He 'checked' in by giving his homework and then placing his clip on the chart.  If he had good behavior and answered questions, he'd earn a ticket at the end of the day.  Then he got right to work on a math writing sheet - writing numerals from 1-100.  We waved good bye and I took the little boys home.  It was awesome- I got home and put the little boys down for a nap and had a whole hour to myself! I was giddy! But little did I know that Ty would stop napping by the next week....  parenthood! Always full of changes :-) We parked and picked up Britton outside.  Mrs. Skolnick was waiting with him and invited us back into the classroom.  She said Britton was a superstar and did wonderfully.  I didn't have any doubt!
The next day, the school bus was scheduled to begin.  I had planned to take him the first week or so, but Britton said he wanted to try it.  I wasn't sure if I wanted him to try it! I was relieved when the bus came on Tuesday, to see Danny Brinton, a friend from church.  He was on the same bus and asked Britton if he wanted to sit by him.  When I picked up Brit from school on Tuesday, he was crying.  I told him that I was going to be driving up in the carpool line so it may be a few minutes of waiting.  But he forgot.  I don't blame him.  There was so much new info shoved at him the first week.  He was crying because he didn't think I was coming to get him.  And Mrs. Skolnick wasn't there.  I guess the teachers don't usually come out - just some adults to help with traffic and crossing.  Britton said that an adult told him, "Well, look at all these cars!" as if to say I was still coming.  But he also told me that when the bus got to school, it looked like a different school.  I didn't even think of that since the bus arrives on the other side of the building.  Anyways, Tuesday was a bit emotional.  But he still wanted to go back! Oh, and Tuesday morning he had gotten his immunizations.  That kind of scared and hurt him.  He later told me that he didn't think the needle was going to go in his body.  But afterwards he told me, 'It was just worth it so that I can go to Kindergarten". Below is Britton's bus driving away on his first day of school.

In other areas, I bought my first kale and collard greens.  At first I juiced them along with other things.  It was pretty good.  Later I made Zuppa Toscano soup.  It was DeLiCiOuS!
 Camden chillin' at tennis lessons.
This week I started a game of earning tickets for good behavior and meals.  Good behavior means not standing on your chair, not fighting or saying mean things, but saying good words and eating nicely.  After Tyler heard those rules, he told me I was beautiful :-)
So excited about a Valentines package from Grandma and Grandpa Trost.

On Friday, I got a sitter and volunteered in Britton's classroom.  They had other parents there and we helped with some school games for Valentines day.  I loved being able to go.  Britton loved receiving Valentines! And he was really nice to share with Tyler.
