This was Landon and the kids' first time to Niagra Falls, New York.
The Asian girls asked if they could take a picture with them. Asians sure know how to take pictures... I want to look through their scrapbooks some day. They always seem camera happy :-)
The good thing about going on the off season is that there aren't any crowds.
But it was FREEZING! It looked beautiful anyways, though.
Brit's being so funny with his tongue....Can you even tell that Camden is inside Landon's jacket? You can be sure it's cold when Landon will wear mittens, hat, and ear muffs all without being asked :-)
Driving in the car was NOT making Camden happy. He's a true New York baby and loves the carrier. He had never been in a car seat to adjust to it. He cried for hours and hours. It was sad for him and us. He got better as the days went by.
After Niagra Falls, we drove a few hours to Kirtland, Ohio. We just barely made it! We went on the last tour of the Kirtland Temple before it was closed for Christmas, New Years, all of January, and most of February. Whew! We were SO GLAD that we made it in time! Seriously - we made it with only about 15 minutes to spare. It was so neat to go inside. Our tour guide was very nice.
Because it was getting late, we just got to go inside the Newel K Whitney store. I wasn't even thinking we'd be able to do that, so I was thrilled. The boys were getting rambunctious, so Landon took them outside, and the older missionary Elder took me on a short tour.
The picture below is the upstairs room where the Prophet held the first School of the Prophets and received the Word of Wisdom revelation.
Historical Background
President Brigham Young said: “I think I am as well acquainted with the circumstances which led to the giving of the Word of Wisdom as any man in the Church, although I was not present at the time to witness them. The first school of the prophets was held in a small room situated over the Prophet Joseph’s kitchen, in a house which belonged to Bishop Whitney. … The brethren came to that place for hundreds of miles to attend school in a little room probably no larger than eleven by fourteen. When they assembled together in this room after breakfast, the first they did was to light their pipes and, while smoking, talk about the great things of the kingdom and spit all over the room, and as soon as the pipe was out of their mouths a large chew of tobacco would then be taken. Often when the Prophet entered the room to give the school instructions he would find himself in a cloud of tobacco smoke. This, and the complaints of his wife at having to clean so filthy a floor, made the Prophet think upon the matter, and he inquired of the Lord relating to the conduct of the Elders in using tobacco, and the revelation known as the Word of Wisdom was the result of his inquiry. You know what it is and can read it at your leisure.” (In Journal of Discourses, 12:158.)
The missionary said this was the room (which is the next room over) where the Prophet received many revelations that are contained in the Doctrine and Covenants. The table was Joseph Smith's.
Also upstairs, is this bedroom that Joseph and Emma used. Here was where Joseph Smith III was born.
Here's the store in relation to the Whitney home...
....and other buildings there in Kirtland. I believe the brick one below was a hotel? I just remember the missionary saying that is where Joseph Smith purchased the mummies, inside which he found the papyri that he translated into the book of Abraham.
Luckily Camden got somewhat adjusted to the traveling and was in happier spirits the last day :-)
This was the last dinner on the road. As usual, I would feed Cam during rest stops and Landon would take the older boys out to eat/ potty/ stretch their legs. It was cute to watch them through the windows. Boy were we glad to get back home! It was rough driving with three young kids! The older two were actually quite content with DVDs, but Camden cried a lot. And then there were the 'I need to go potty' emergencies and having to get off the toll roads to find a bathroom. Ah.... nice to be home :-)
